Finalising the BioAssembler visual dictionary

Remember the art-based book on biosensors that we mentioned in previous publications (such as this one)? The book that aims to introduce non-specialists to biosensor technologies, concepts, and the economic, legal, and social contexts in which they are embedded?

Nearing completion, we are delighted to announce a new collaboration with award-winning Portugal-based graphic designer and art director Joana Monteiro, who will lead the layout and graphic design of our open-access illustrated guide in print and digital formats.

Short engaging texts paired with original illustrations by Helsinki-based illustrator and artist Ines Montalvão will now be brought together by Joana, whose keen eye for graphic design will enhance this educational resource and key communication output.

Joana’s work is distinguished by a love of typography and a mixing of artistic techniques to create evocative, impactful graphic images. She has earned degrees in Painting and Communication Design (ARCA, Coimbra), Graphic Design (MA, University of the Arts London), and has studied at the Royal College of Arts, London.

Over her career, Joana has worked with a wide range of cultural clients in Portugal and the U.K. A freelancer and founder of the Clube dos Tipos, you can learn more about her work here.

We look forward to working with Joana, whose contribution strengthens our commitment to clear and engaging open-access science communication. It also supports BioAssembler and Horizon Europe’s objectives for dissemination, stakeholder engagement, and societal impact.

We will continue to share updates about this book as this collaboration develops.
