Exploring biosensors’ scientific production and research patterns

BioAssembler researchers Bernardo Valente, Hugo Pinto, Tiago Santos Pereira e Rita Campos, from the Centre for Social Studies (CES), University of Coimbra, recently published the paper “Exploring Biosensors’ Scientific Production and Research Patterns: A Bibliometric Analysis”.

The study presents a scientific and technological knowledge base on biosensing devices and identifies the main scientific organisations developing the technology throughout the COVID-19 period (2019–2023). The mapping was carried out using bibliometric analysis of Web of Science journals.

Results showed that the institutional origin of the publications characterised the overall distribution of knowledge competencies and research partnerships, and the growth of the field of green chemistry and sustainability in biosensor research and production. However, the lack of scientific links between the three axes of organisations that produce specialised knowledge in biosensor’s development and innovation (China, USA and Russia) points to the need for new co-authorship and collaboration mechanisms.

The study further highlights current concerns in the field about the design and performance of biosensors. It points out that the aim has been to make them ever smaller and with more stable results, particularly after the COVID-19 period.
